When the misfits of Class 3-E get stuck with a smiley-faced, octopus-tentacled schoolteacher with bizarre superpowers, they discover they have a lot to learn...
Koro Sensei has already blown up the moon. He promises not to do the same to the Earth on one condition...that he be allowed to teach a certain junior high school remedial class for one year. In addition, he'll allow the students to attempt to take him out at any time without retaliating. Whoever succeeds gets a huge cash reward from the Ministry of Defense. But now the students of Class 3-E are the only ones standing in the way of the destruction of the planet!
Meet the would-be assassins of class 3-E: Sugino, who let his grades slip and got kicked off the baseball team. Karma, who's doing well in his classes but keeps getting suspended for fighting. And Okuda, who lacks both academic and social skills, yet excels at one subject: chemistry. Who has the best chance of winning that reward? Will the deed be accomplished through pity, brute force or poison...? And what chance does their teacher have of repairing his students' tattered self-esteem?

Gr 9 Up-An alien who has the power to destroy the earth makes a couple of unusual decisions. First, he eradicates most of the moon (what's left of it is in a permanent crescent shape). Then he says that he will destroy the earth later that year unless class 3-E of Kunugigaoka Junior High can figure out how to kill him. Several factors make this seem like an impossible task-class 3-E is academically the worst class in the school, and the alien can move at Mach 20 speed, escaping every assassination attempt so far. The alien, nicknamed Koro Sensei ("teacher who can't be killed") by his students, is by turns hilarious, deadly, and an excellent teacher at the middle school. This book begins as a simple adventure story, but the further teens get into the story, the more they will see the subtext of "bad" students becoming empowered to find their real talents. Matsui's artwork is filled with action and humor, capturing the realistic aspects of the human characters and the smiley face and tentacles of the alien. VERDICT An entertaining adventure story ranging from darkest to lightest comedy that will leave readers clamoring for the next books in the series.-Andrea Lipinski, New York Public Library © Copyright 2014.
