Summary
In the town of Dumpty, Little Lumpty dreams of climbing to the top of a high wall--even though he knows all too well what happened to Humpty Dumpty on the very same wall many years before. And then one day he climbs the wall, looks down and begins to shake. Will he fall and never be put back together again? A tale of chance taken and a dream come true, Little Lumpty is the whimsical creation of Miko Imai. Full color.

School Library Journal Review
PreS-Gr 2-This sweet bit of fairy-tale stretching is set in the village of Dumpty, whose one oddity is an immense brick wall. The story opens long after the fall of Humpty Dumpty, but he is still lovingly memorialized by the ovoid inhabitants. Despite warnings from his mother, Little Lumpty dreams of scaling the wall. One day its magneticism becomes irresistible and he finds himself at the top. A wonderful illustration captures the horrible moment when he makes the crucial mistake of looking down. Paralyzed with fright, he remembers Humpty's fate and screams for help. The whole town comes running, and Lumpty's mother directs the neighbors in stretching out a blanket. The young egg bounces to safety and is reunited with his extremely understanding mom, who serves him cookies and hot chocolate as he explains, ``I just had to see what it would be like on top.'' This simply told story is illustrated with gouache paintings depicting a New England-esque setting and cartoonlike egg villagers (Lumpty sports a red cap and sneakers). It may not be popular with parents intent on impressing their offspring with the seriousness of danger. For children who have already learned that lesson, however, the book pumps some verve into a classic nursery rhyme.-Lisa S. Dedicated to the memory of Humpty Dumpty, the whimsical story of Little Lumpty, who manages to scale that famous wall, "breaks no new ground," said PW, though it offers "fleeting moments of dramatic tension." Ages 4-up. (Mar.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved
Horn Book Review
Knowing the fate that had befallen Humpty Dumpty, his famous predecessor, a young and adventurous egg named Lumpty still scales the alluring brick wall in his town but panics atop it. Scrambling townsfolk rescue Lumpty from the wall and from his curiosity. Rendered in gouache, naive pictures convey a childlike simplicity that complements a fresh take on the popular nursery rhyme. Booklist Review
Ages 4-6. In the town of Dumpty, everyone remembers what all the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't put back together again. Little Lumpty, an egg with skinny legs and arms, a baseball cap, and sneakers, loves the wall that Humpty fell from and dreams of climbing to the top, no matter what Mom says. When he achieves his dream, the view is great--until he looks down and remembers the late Humpty. Mom organizes a rescue mission, and after a successful blanket jump, Lumpty is tucked cozily into bed. "But I still love that wall," he whispers. Maybe Mom should move. The double-page spread picturing Lumpty's view from above is bound to induce a little vertigo; the combination of egg-shaped bodies and a suburban housing-development setting will lead to some laughs. ~--Mary Harris Veeder
