Summary
It was always the same recurring dream that had haunted Annabel's childhood, the terrifying image of the fire that had killed her mother and baby brother, but she could never remember how it started. She couldn't be sure that it wasn't her fault.
Annabel had thought that finding Lawerence again, the handsome stranger she had fallen in love with when she was sixteen, would finally lay these unhappy memories to rest. But the nightmare had returned and she was convinced that it was linked to a sinister figure. She had to remember what had happened if she was to have any chance of future happiness with Lawerence. Would the truth be harder to live with than the nightmare?

Booklist Review
The dream is always the same: a nursery, a baby boy, a lit match, and a scream-filled inferno. Five-year-old Annabel didn't know if she started the fire that killed her mother and baby brother, but since her father blamed her, she believed she did. As she grows up, she tries to forget the past. She marries, has a healthy baby boy, and accepts her grandmother's former housekeeper into the happy household, but sorrow seems to follow Annabel. Her husband dies unexpectedly; her son suffers a riding mishap and his pony dies under mysterious circumstances; and the housekeeper lurks behind doors, listening to phone conversations and snooping in private papers. As Annabel grows closer to finding joy with a new love, the terrible incidents escalate to frightening proportions. Who hates Annabel, and are these terrors tied to her childhood? Sole's depiction of an emotionally torn woman haunted by tragedy is suitable for all collections. --Melanie Duncan
