Publisher's Weekly Review
Ryan, founder of Ascend Communication (which he sold to Lucent for $25 billion), now spends his time offering guidance to entrepreneurs, particularly recent college graduates intent on launching businesses. Ryan won't invite just anyone to his Montana ranch for strategy sessions: his selection criteria include a solid business plan, a working prototype and clear ideas for the direction of the business. Ryan's upbeat approach and practical advice will be welcome in today's Internet-crazed economy. With extensive online and broadcast publicity, this book should easily find its audience. Booklist Review
Ryan is the former CEO of Ascend Communications, the networking company he founded in 1989. Last year Lucent Technologies bought Ascend for $25 billion; now Ryan is "retired" at the age of 48. With his wife, he has started Entrepreneur America on a 1,200-acre ranch in Montana. The enterprise has been described as a Wild West boot camp, where would-be startups present their business proposals and strategies and, more often than not, Ryan "shoots them down." If he does see potential, Ryan takes one percent of the fledgling's stock and a seat on its board in exchange for his relentless but valuably constructive criticism. Here, Ryan explains his determination of whether an entrepreneur is ready to meet with a venture capitalist and whether he or she has targeted the right market and understands how to leverage the company's core competency. He describes the business fundamentals at which one must be adept to build a business. The author addresses the concerns of a growing business^-managing operations, hiring employees, and selecting a board. ^-David Rouse
Library Journal Review
Having sold his highly successful company, Ascend Communications, to Lucent, Ryan left Silicon Valley, moved to Montana, and decided to give back to the business world by helping other entrepreneurs through his Entrepreneur America program. This carefully staged process, expounded here with coauthor Hise (301 Great Ideas for Using Technology), teaches the fundamentals of focusing, developing, and promoting entrepreneurial ideas to create healthy, successful companies that thrive on change. The first chapterD"Which Wanna-Be Are You?"Dwill help those starting out determine their core values and whether they truly are entrepreneurs. One of the most practical sections, "Peeing in the Wells," provides annotated examples of a winning executive summary and a successful business presentation aimed at raising capital. Whether they are just researching an idea or looking to improve an existing small business, readers will find this a valuable guide.DSusan C.
