Gr 5-8-An excellent look at what young women can expect upon entering the Marine Corps. All aspects of the recruit experience at Parris Island are detailed. Rowan gives reasons why training is difficult; instructors offer advice on how to succeed. The book is clearly written and easy to read. A brief history of the Marine Corps and the role of women in this branch of the armed services is included. Good-quality black-and-white photographs appear throughout.-Rick Moesch, Hamburg Public Library, NY (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Horn Book Review
An account of boot camp at Parris Island, as experienced by a group of female recruits, introduces the various phases of Marine training and reveals how women successfully meet the challenge. The recruits do almost everything the men do, and the reader is ready to cheer when graduation time arrives. Concluding chapters describe career patterns and the expanding role of women in the military. Candid black-and-white photographs capture moments of concentration, exhaustion, and pride. Ind.
