School Library Journal Review
In eight well-organized chapters, Kuckreja presents the life and inextricable times of Cambodia's Prince Sihanouk. From his startling abdication as king in 1955 (to run for political office), the ups and downs of Sihanouk's career and Cambodia's tragic history are carefully and absorbingly detailed right through to the Vietnamese withdrawal and subsequent peace talks of 1989. Perforce, this is a mini-history of Cambodia since World War II as well, balanced and unbiased with regard to both Sihanouk and his contemporaries. The text is lucid, logical, and lively to read--and one of the very few children's biographies that can lay claim as a page-turner. This is further enhanced by illuminating quotations in the margins at pertinent points, drawn from Sihanouk, Cambodian refugees, foreign diplomats, press, and observers. The black-and-white photographs add another element of documentary immediacy. This work sets new standards for biography for children. --John Philbrook, San Francisco Pub . Lib . (c) Copyright 2010.
