School Library Journal Review
Gr 9 Up-At Texas High School, boys are allowed to do whatever they want, while girls are subject to a sexist dress code, harassment and gross comments from boys. Fed up with the treatment, Vivian Carter follows in her mom's footsteps and starts a feminist zine anonymously. Soon, other girls are onboard, friendships are forged, and a revolution begins. Suzy Jackson brings her vast narration experience to Matthieu's book in a fun and fitting way. Her distinct voices fit well with the ages of the characters, and her intonations and narrative pace complement the author's well-developed plot and strong female characters. Addressing rape culture, the story encourages listeners to be strong and stand up for themselves. -VERDICT A highly recommended addition to any high school audiobook collection.-Jessica Moody, Granite School District, Salt Lake City © Copyright 2018. Horn Book Review
Vivian Carter, frustrated with the systemic sexism of her small-town Texas high school, secretly distributes a zine proclaiming, Moxie girls fight back! Though shes shy in real life, Viv draws inspiration from her moms old Riot Grrrl music from the nineties. Soon, young women from every social sphere of the school are banding together and standing up for one another, but their actions also bring unwanted attention their way. As the drama of Vivs protest builds to a crescendo, Jackson voices the teens increased confidence and fierce camaraderie without missing a beat. Jacksons pitch-perfect narration makes the most of the books first-person perspective and snappy, energetic dialogue. The images of Vivs zine, so central to the book, are of course missing from the audio, but the plot does not suffer greatly without them. sarah berman (c) Copyright 2018.
